| 30/08/08 | Report Condemns Inequitable Access to Health Care (TalkLeft) | |
Published 30/08/08 08:01:18 Health is a function of wealth, and it always will be in the absence of universal health care. Setting aside the differing approaches taken by Barack Obama and John McCain to health care access, the broader problem of inequality extends far beyond American borders. A report commissioned by the World Health Organization "finds a majority of people in the world do not enjoy good health because of a toxic combination of poor social policies, unfair economics and bad politics." The chairman of the commission that produced the report, Sir Michael Marmot, says: "Between countries, we have life expectancy differences of more than 40 years. A woman in Botswana can expect to live 43 years, in Japan 86 years... That is unnecessary. There is no good biological reason why that is the case," he said. "It arises because of the social conditions in which people are born, they grow, they live, they work and they age. And, because of the set of economic arrangements, the values of society that are responsible for those conditions." Health problems are compounded for girls in countries that limit their educational opportunities. [More ...] Marmot: "That is quite wrong. It is quite wrong. We know that education is a key driver of the health of those girls when they become women. And, it is a key determinant of the health of their children when they become mothers," he said. "That infant and child deaths could be reduced to a high degree by investing in the education of women." Also wrong -- morally wrong -- are systems of health care distribution that regard good health as the privilege of those who can afford medical care. Where systematic differences in health are judged to be avoidable by reasonable action they are, quite simply, unfair. It is this that we label health inequity. Putting right these inequities ? the huge and remediable differences in health between and within countries ? is a matter of social justice. Reducing health inequities is ... an ethical imperative. Social injustice is killing people on a grand scale. Executive summary (40 page pdf) The report and related information. |

| 30/08/08 | Final notes from Denver (with extended baseball metaphors) (Blue Mass. Group - Front Page) | |
Published 30/08/08 04:04:30 In spite of abundant information available, some continue to wonder exactly what change Obama will bring. Talking to our Massachusetts congressional delegation, they are chomping at the bit to begin working on any number of enormous issues, from global warming to energy to hunger to health care and on and on and on. They really want to do the work. I just have to imagine that a Democratic congress with a President Obama really adds up to a historically progressive 2009 -- maybe not a series of home runs, but consistent policy singles and doubles. It really is a big deal, and it matters whom you elect. It has struck me in speechmaking, the Dem party is a lot like a baseball team with a great 3-4-5 hitters, but pretty weak tablesetters at the top and bottom of the lineup. Wednesday night, Clinton-Kerry-Biden was a pretty strong sequence, I thought (and Obama is in a class of his own); but my goodness, I heard more than my share of clunky, unfocused, cliche-ridden speeches read with flat, uninflected (even if loud) delivery. The things that make good speeches and speakers have simply got to be learnable skills. I don't know precisely what they are yet, but Ted Sorensen's book Counselor has a couple of good chapters on it. 85,000 folks at Invesco was amazing, a total sensory and community experience -- even though getting in was a security scrum, taking some folks 2.5 hours to get in. And 85,000 folks leaving Invesco was a confused muddle. I walked about 1.5 miles in the dark with thousands of other disoriented people who also didn't seem to have much idea where they were going. But at least we were in it together! Downtown denver is beautiful, walkable, relatively bikeable, clean, old, new, funky, and interesting, with good strong drink. Nice city, there. With mountains. Go visit. (This message brought to you by the Denver Chamber of Commerce.) That said, its highly touted light rail sucks. An ancient ticket machine puttered out our tickets on a dot matrix printer. Felt like 1982 on the Commodore 64. The train itself is OK, but doesn't really go anywhere except the big downtown places. For good public transportation, it really needs to go everywhere. Yes, the MBTA is a hell of a lot better, warts and all. Big shout out to our wonderful hosts J, C, F, and A for putting us up in Boulder. Couldn't have done it without you guys. Awesome. And many, many thanks to the many people who helped us out in Denver. Kate Donaghue shepherded us through many a bureaucratic credentialing process; Alex, Stacy, Christine, and Gloribell all looked out for us. I admit that it would seem that we have been officially co-opted by the establishment ... but hey, they treat us pretty well. (Keep us honest, folks.) |

| 30/08/08 | Brilliant choice McCain (A Western Heart) | |
Published 30/08/08 02:02:00 She definitely has my vote, too bad I can't vote. Need to read up some more on her, but that video is definitely a good start. I'll add quotes as I surf the net pilfering merrily. Updates to follow. NRO - Strength in foreign policy; reforms of taxes and health care geared to the middle class; and a moderate social conservatism: It?s a potentially winning message, and now Republicans have a ticket that is suited to it. Via Michelle Malkin - She has brought Republicans and Democrats together within her Administration and has a record of delivering on the change and reform that we need in Washington. .... She has actually used her veto and cut budgetary spending. She put a stop to the ?bridge to nowhere? that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars. David Keene, Chairman of the American Conservative Union - I predict any conservatives who have been lukewarm thus far in their support of the McCain candidacy will work their hearts out between now and November for the McCain - Palin ticket. Jennifer Rubin at PJM - a pro-life hunter with a passion for domestic energy development. Ed Morrissey: Change conservatives can believe in! Something that will hurt Obama because of his left-of-left position on abortion. Lifenews - Palin, the 44-year-old governor of Alaska, takes a strong pro-life position on both abortion and bioethics issues. "Senator McCain made an outstanding pick from the choices that were on the table. Sarah Palin clearly addresses the issues so many conservatives are concerned about," says Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council. As many as 80 percent of unborn children diagnosed with Down syndrome become victims of abortion, but Palin didn't let her child become a statistic. Palin, who has deeply-felt pro-life views, gave birth to her fifth child and the baby was diagnosed with the condition. Palin confirmed her baby, named Trig Paxson, has Down syndrome. ? Sarah Palin is the whole package . There couldn't be a better vice presidential pick,? says Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of the Susan B. Anthony List. ?Women voters are electrified, and Sarah is someone who is truly in sync with the way real American women think," she told LifeNews.com right after the selection. "She is a reform-minded woman who will give all Americans, born and unborn, the authentic leadership they deserve.? .... Dannenfelser added that having Palin on the ticket will attract women voters and some of the Hillary Clinton supporters who aren't happy with Barack Obama. ?The majority of American women support commonsense restrictions on abortion. Adding Palin to the GOP ticket will resonate with independent women voters nationwide," Dannenfelser told LifeNews.com. Rev. Rob Schenck, an evangelical pro-life advocate who directs the National Clergy Council, also commented on the selection and said McCain made an excellent decision. "Governor Palin is a committed and active Christian who takes her faith seriously and lives her pro-life and pro-family convictions," he said. |
